A new employee communications blog

While the world of PR blogs grows, there still are few blogs dedicated solely to internal communications (which, I happen to believe, is the most important communication effort in which a company can engage). I was thrilled to get an email this morning from my old friend Ron Shewchuk pointing me to his new blog, ”For Your Approval,” which will focus strictly on employee communications.

Ron—who splits his time between communications and barbecue (he’s the host of a new barbecue podcast), was behind some of the most impressive investor communications I’d ever seen when he handled the role at Suncor, the Canadian energy company. But, like me, his heart is in employee communications. He introduces his blog by acknowledging the life of an internal communicator: “FYA is a blog for everyone who has the sometimes thankless and always challenging task of communicating with the employees of an organization.” I’m looking forward to it.

  1. Great to see another internal practitioner is going to add value to the blogosphere!  Just wanted to say that there is another internal comms blog called “The Memo” and I will be posting a link to Ron’s blog on the site.

    Cheers!

  2. I am a PR student at Auburn University.  As a senior about to enter the job market I am always interested in the ideas that will help set me apart. My passion is for internal communications.  I feel that without substantial internal communications a company will fail to execute itself properly and efficiently.
As part of my classes I have created and maintained a blog.  At first I was apprehensive and unsure.  Blogging?  What am I suppose to do with that?  I soon found out how important it is to communicate not only within an organization, but also to its external publics.  I have found that blogging is a way for a great deal of people to communicate ideas efficiently and quickly and get a response in just the same manner.
I am now excited about blogging and know for a fact that when I venture into the world of internal communications I will make it a point to implement that idea.  The direct way that an employee can communicate his/her concerns with the understanding that those concerns will be addressed will undoubtedly create an ease in the workplace.  I applaud all others who react to this new communication tool with excitement.  I am interested in seeing if having a blog for employees will indeed enhance internal communication practices.  If someone knows of any statistics, I am surely interested.

  3. Dear Mr. Holtz,
I am a junior at Southern Methodist University studying Corporate Communications and Public Affairs. I came across your blog today and I am really interested in your opinions on Public Relations. I am in a class right now where we are studying blogging and how it is affecting the PR world. I was wondering if you have any stories or tips you could share with me about getting clients good exposure. What do you think are the best, cutting edge ways for “getting ink”? I would love to hear from you and I would really appreciate any opinions or comments you may have about this topic or any others. You can write me back on my own blog at http://www.beccaburnitt.blogspot.com. Also, please feel free to check out our class blog at http://www.smuccpaclass.blogspot.com. Thank you so much and I look foward to hearing from you!
