FIR Speakers & Speeches/NMRCast - Third Thursday Panel Discussion: January 18, 2007
Content summary: The Bay Area’s Third Thursday group, meeting at Shine SF in San Francisco, heard a panel discussion about the Social Media Press Release. The panel discussion was led by Chris Heuer, and featured Shel Holtz, Brian Solis, Tom Foremski, and special guest, Joel Tesch from BusinessWire.
At the session, Mike Manuel, one of Third Thursday’s founders, announced a new partnership with Social Media Club and the Society for New Communication Research.
Stowe Boyd, who was at the event and asked a few questions, voiced his alternate view of the social media release on his blog, and Chris responded on the Social Media Release blog. Nothing like a bit of controversy to get the juices flowing!
This podcast is being fed through two feeds. The NMRCast is not included in the regular FIR “everything” feed because of the specialized nature of the content. But this is also being delivered through the FIR Speakers & Speeches feed, and thus is also included in the “everything” feed.

Shel, I’m glad you mentioned and linked to Stowe’s “alternate view” and Chris’ response. That’s a very interesting and important conversation, and although I don’t agree with everything Stowe said, he brings up one point that really made me think:
How can/do people reconcile the “we must have honesty and transparency” approach of “social media” with the “this is how we’ve always done it and it’s no big deal” acceptance of literally inventing quotes for news releases? At first it seems a small point, but it’s actually one hell of a smack in the face when you think about it.
