In defense of Twitter’s “Trending Topics”

My very first AudioBoo is a rebuttal to my good friend Shel Israel’s argument that Twitter should scrap its “Trending Topics” feature:

  1. the issue of gaming is one that concerns me the most, because it’s about trust. If this gaming becomes abused it will be digital junk mail. Now one man’s gaming for goodness is perhaps another’s chance to bum rush the charts. 

    I too would not ditch trending topics but I must admit, when giving a presentation it is difficult for Twitter to be respected by brands, business, and government, when #imakeepit100 is the leading topic.

    I think you make an excellent point about the value of the trending topics for news and shared community issues. Do you have any thoughts about how Twitter might clean-up the trending topics?
