Just another company location

At the bottom of Dell Computers‘ home page, there’s a pull-down menu you can use to load a version of the home page in the language of your country. It’s a pretty comprehensive list, and it got a bit longer recently with the addition of Second Life, nestled between Saudi Arabia and Senegal.

Select Second Life from the list and you’ll find yourself on a special Dell/SL page featuring information on how to join SL and get to Dell Island, along with a teleport for existing residents.

Dell recently launched Dell Island with an in-world press conference. The locale includes stations where visitors can configure Dell computers. While some companies make a big deal about their entry into SL, it appears Dell views it as just another place for the company to have a presence. I hesitate to make any “first” claims regarding SL (based on hard-earned experience), but it’s definitely the first time I’ve seen a company add SL to the location list on its primary website.

Hat tip to Dell’s Laura Thomas, who points to the move as a sign of Dell’s commitment to integrate its SL presence with its real-life business.

  1. Shel,

Apparently this only works if you enter the US site first. If you choose another country, Second Life is not listed.
