New podcast search launches…sort of

On its site and via press release, TVEyes—a company that lets customers search radio and TV recordings by keyword—announced the launch of Podscope, a search engine designed specifically for podcasts. The company claims it’s the first search engine of its kind, but I’m not sure of the truth of that statement, given the capabilities of search engines like 49Media. Still, Podscope should be useful given the statement that it “makes every word searchable within a podcast, enables the audio indexing of podcast content, which is equally applicable to video blogs and personal videos.”

How well does it work? Beats me, since a visit to the Podscope site reveals nothing more than a placeholder page announcing, “We’re listening. You’re searching. Podscope is coming soon.” To announce the service but not have it available for testing is the worst kind of marketing. Reading the news release makes you want to rush right over and try it, not leave your e-mail address to be notified of the real launch. (You can also submit your own podcast to be included in Podscope’s searches.)

There’s no word on whether the searches will produce time codes for finding content within a podcast or whether the service will be free.
